A Natural & Relaxed Micklefield Hall Wedding Photographer Near Watford, Hertfordshire
If you’re looking for a wedding venue that gives you incredible variety without the grandeur of a country house, Micklefield Hall near Watford in Hertfordshire is hard to beat. Nestled in the countryside just 25 miles from London, this private estate has everything – historic charm, beautiful gardens and flexible spaces . It’s perfect for couples who want to their wedding to flow from space to gorgeous space. I’ve been lucky enough to work at Micklefield Hall several times in the last few years.. It really is a photographer’s dream, and I’d love to show you how it could work for your day and be your Micklefield Hall Wedding Photographer!
Ceremony & Reception Spaces at Micklefield Hall
One of the biggest strengths of Micklefield Hall is the sheer choice of settings, all within easy walking distance of each other.
- The Grade II-listed 16th-century Tithe Barn is award-winning for a reason. With its beautiful natural wood and exposed beams, it works with any colour palette and theme — from bold and bright florals to simple greenery. It’s licensed for ceremonies and is also a stunning space for wedding breakfasts and evening celebrations.
- The Lakeside Temple is one of the most romantic outdoor ceremony spots in Hertfordshire. Sitting right by the water and surrounded by greenery, it feels intimate without being small and photographs beautifully from every angle – `I am in love with the symmetry of this setting!
- The Garden Courtyard with Blossom Trees offers another outdoor ceremony option that feels relaxed and joyful, especially in spring and early summer when everything is in bloom.
- The Rose Gardens and Grounds tie everything together. They’re not just pretty backdrops — they’re spaces where guests naturally wander, chat, laugh and linger, which is exactly what you want if you’re hoping for genuine, unposed photos.
Couple Portraits from Micklefield Hall
As a Micklefield Hall Wedding Photographer I think that nothing really beats this venue for the variety of spaces we can use for your couple portraits. Take a look at these lovely images from around the grounds of Micklefield Hall.
Ali & Dee — Garden Portraits & Lakeside Calm
Ali and Dee’s couple portraits made the most of the gardens, which were still beautifully in flower despite the heat earlier in the season. We took a relaxed wander around the temple, lake and garden paths. Because the surroundings are so gorgeous, even the simplest moments — walking hand in hand, stopping to laugh — turned into fabulous natural portraits.

Fran & Steve – A Woodland Wander
For Fran and Steve we decided to head across the fields for the couple shots, working our way to the woodland area for some shots around there. It was a very different feel to the gardens – but I just love the variety of options Micklefield Hall has to offer couples that get married there.

Photography Tips for Micklefield Hall
Best Times & Places for Couple Portraits
- Temple and lake area: Perfect for calm, romantic portraits with reflections and greenery.
- Rose gardens: Ideal for colour, texture and a relaxed stroll-style shoot.
- Field and woodlands: Especially good later in the day when the light softens.
- Around the barn: Great for a bit of variety and something different to greenery.
If you don’t want to “go off for photos”, this venue makes it easy to stay close to your guests and still get beautiful images. You can plan in a portrait session straight after your ceremony (when you’re feeling your best) and also one for later in the evening – I can advise on the best times to catch that evening sunshine.
Wet Weather & Bright Sun
If the weather turns, the barn, courtyard and covered areas mean we’re never stuck for places to go. And on bright days, the woodland areas offer plenty of open shade so you won’t be squinting or overheating during portraits.
Natural Gathering Spots
Every space at Micklefield is well planned. The lawns, courtyard and garden paths are naturally where people come together and make for brilliant for candid photos of hugs, conversations and laughter — the stuff that really makes your gallery sing.
