Springtime Bluebells
Step into spring with me for a relaxed, informal bluebell photoshoot in a beautiful woodland in Hertfordshire. It’s the perfect way to spend time outdoors, soak up all that gorgeous colour, and capture some natural, joy-filled family photos!
Hey, I’m Rachael — a Hertfordshire bluebell photographer based near Watford, specialising in relaxed family bluebell photography.
Each spring, I offer Hertfordshire bluebell family photoshoots in Croxley Green woodlands. My bluebell family photoshoots are designed to celebrate your family in a setting that feels magical. My approach is about gentle guidance, plenty of play, and space to have fun and make memories together as a family.
As a mum and former primary school teacher, I know how to help little ones feel comfortable and confident, turning a photoshoot into an easy, enjoyable experience for children and adults!
Outside of bluebell season, you’ll still find me photographing families across Hertfordshire — whether that’s wandering through Cassiobury Park, exploring Rickmansworth Aquadrome, or capturing everyday life at home – you can find out more about my everyday family photography below.

A Little Bluebell Magic
Did you know that bluebells are a legally protected species? And, almost half the world’s bluebells grow right here in the UK. These little gorgeous flowers bloom from mid-April into May, turning our woodlands into carpets of dreamy blue — and they make the most magical backdrop for family portraits.
My bluebell sessions take place in beautiful woodland around Croxley Green, where I work carefully to protect these delicate, short-lived flowers. I’m very careful to choose areas where we can shoot safely without damaging them. Every photoshoot spot is handpicked so we can enjoy the beauty of the bluebells while helping to keep them flourishing for years to come.
How does a Hertfordshire Bluebell Photoshoot work?
My Hertfordshire bluebell photoshoots are held in woodlands in Croxley Green, Hertfordshire, but do get in touch if you have bluebell woods near you and we can chat!
Bluebell season is late April and early May. Booking is always open for next season’s bluebells, so you can get in touch and book at any time (and slots do get booked ahead so I recommend getting in touch sooner rather than later).
Families with children of all ages are welcome, but if you have a babe in arms, I do recommend waiting until they can sit. With my background as a teacher, I’m very used to working with children and creating a calm, friendly space where everyone can relax and be themselves.
My full bluebell sessions last around an hour. This gives us plenty of time to meet, chat, stroll around the bluebells, give everyone a chance to shine and have some fun!
Around about a month before your shoot, I’ll send out a bluebell photoshoot preperation guide. This is full of everything you need to know – what to wear, where to meet and how to get the kids prepared! And I’m always available for any questions in the run up to your shoot.
We’ll meet at the woodland entrance (there’s parking right nearby), have a little chat and wander through the trees together to find the prettiest bluebell patches.
Once we’re there, I’ll guide you through a few relaxed poses and prompts — think walking, twirling, cuddling, and just being yourselves. My goal is to capture genuine smiles and natural moments, not stiff poses.
Protecting the bluebells is also at the heart of these sessions. Rather than walking through them, we use pathways and clever angles to create those dreamy images while keeping the special woodland environment safe for years to come.
After your Hertfordshire bluebell family photoshoot, you’ll receive a private online gallery to view your images at home. Every full shoot has all my carefully edited images included and delivered as a high-resolution digital downloads. You will receive at least 50 images included from your 1 hour session. You’ll have a beautiful collection ready to print, share, and enjoy — no difficult decisions about which to keeo or any hidden extras.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is a Hertfordshire Bluebell Photoshoot?
A bluebell family photoshoot is a seasonal outdoor photography session held in Hertfordshire’s woodland areas when bluebells are in full bloom (late April to early May). These photo sessions capture natural family portraits among vibrant bluebell woods.
When is bluebell season in Hertfordshire?
In Hertfordshire, bluebell season typically runs from late April to early May, but it does depend on weather conditions each year. The best blooms usually lasts 2–3 weeks, so bookings are limited and highly recommended early.
Where are the best bluebell woods in Hertfordshire?
Hertfordshire is home to several well-known woodland spots with stunning bluebell displays. The woodlands I shoot in are local to Croxley Green, near Watford. The exact location is share after booking.
How do I book a Hertfordshire Bluebell Photoshoot?
You can follow the links above, or contact me directly on info@asyouarephotography.co.uk. I recommend booking several months in advance, especially for late April and early May dates, due to high seasonal demand.
How much does a bluebell photoshoot cost?
My mini sessions cost £60 and include 3 digital downloads. My full sessions are much longer, and include all the images (so no hard decisions afterwards!) and cost £250.
What should we wear for a bluebell family photoshoot?
I always recommend dressing comfortably and wearing footwear that works in woodlands. Soft blues, pale pinks and whites always work well, or if you want to go bright and bold, a splash of yellow looks gorgeous against the bluebells.
Can we bring pets to our photoshoot?
As much as I love including dogs in family sessions, bluebell shoots are the one exception. Bluebells are a legally protected woodland species, and the delicate plants can be easily damaged by paws or wandering off paths. To help preserve these beautiful seasonal displays across Hertfordshire, I kindly ask families to leave their lovely doggy companions at home for these sessions.
If you’d love photos that include your pet, I’m very happy to arrange a separate outdoor family shoot in a pet-friendly location.
Are bluebell shoots suitable for young children?
Absolutely! These sessions are relaxed and child-friendly. I do recommend waiting until your baby is able to sit, as this makes for lovely photos amongst the bluebells. I’m experienced at working with babies, toddlers and older children, helping capture natural, joyful moments without stress.
What happens if it rains?
If the weather is looking very much like an April shower, then we we reschedule to the nearest available date.
Do you offer gift vouchers for bluebell photoshoots?
Yes, I offer gift vouchers which can be used agaist these shoots – they are ideal for birthdays, Mother’s Day or Easter gifts. Vouchers can be redeemed for any available dates during bluebell season. Please email info@asyouarephotography.co.uk to purchase a gift voucher.
When will we receive our photos?
Your full gallery will be ready within 6-8 weeks.
Can we get our photos in digital and print form?
All bluebell shoots include digital images, but through your gallery link you can purchase prints, frames and albums as extras to go with your shoot.
