There’s something extra cosy about a winter wedding, and nowhere does it better in Hertfordshire than Ashridge House. With endless warm indoor spaces and so much scope for decorating that iconic staircase, it’s a photographer’s dream in winter. Annabel and Phil filled their day with thoughtful, romantic touches—and choosing Valentine’s weekend was the perfect finishing touch. Their whole day was full of laughter, happy tears, and fun family moments, and I genuinely had such a joy capturing it all for them!
“Aw Rachael, these are PERFECT. Absolutely stunning!! The colours are beautiful. Honestly, they’re just gorgeous!” – Annabel & Phil
Getting Ready at Ashridge House
I arrived just before 10:30am to find Ashridge already buzzing. Both Annabel and Phil got ready on-site, which is always brilliant because it means I can bounce between rooms easily (and it keeps the morning super relaxed).
Annabel got ready in The Sitting Room, surrounded by gorgeous winter light streaming in through the windows. Bridesmaids and family popped in throughout the morning, keeping things calm but full of excitement.
Phil was getting ready in The Concierge Room, enjoying beers with his Best Men. They’d scheduled a moment to exchange gifts (I love these parts of the day), and it gave the morning such a warm, emotional feel.
The Staircase Hall Ceremony: Winter Wedding Magic
The Staircase Hall at Ashridge House is honestly one of the most dramatic ceremony spaces you’ll ever see. The ceremony takes place right on the central staircase, and Annabel’s entrance down the stairs—while Phil stood waiting with the perfect mix of excitement and nerves—was such a special moment.
They kept the décor simple with fairy lights and candles, which made everything glow beautifully in photos. Readings from family members made the ceremony heartfelt and emotional, with a few tears from Annabel (all captured, of course!).
“So many family members and other guests said how discreet you were – thank you… we literally didn’t even notice you at the time!” – Annabel & Phil
Confetti fun!
Straight after the ceremony came a huge confetti line in the Staircase Hall—full of energy and smiles. Ashridge will let you have confetti inside which is always a bonus in winter! Then we moved into family photos, organised like pros thanks to Best Man Harry.
Afterwards, Annabel, Phil and I explored Ashridge for couple portraits. This venue is packed with stunning spots: the staircase, balcony, conservatory, library, and loads of sheltered areas—so winter weather is never an issue. Even with February drizzle, we managed some outdoor garden photos too!
Reception & Wedding Breakfast Speeches
Guests enjoyed drinks in The Old Library before heading into the Lady Marion Room for the wedding breakfast. Annabel’s dad, Phil, and the Best Man all delivered brilliant speeches—funny, emotional, and perfectly timed.
Tea, coffee, petit fours, and prosecco followed (a winning combo), and Annabel and Phil slipped away for a quick breather to refresh before the evening kicked off.
“We popped the champers and literally sat there for almost two hours laughing and crying over the previews. This was so special.” – Annabel & Phil
Evening Fun: Cheese Tower, First Dance & Dancing
The evening started with cutting their cheese tower (10/10 wedding choice). Then it was time for their first dance in The Wyatt Room, surrounded by fairy lights. After that, the dance floor came alive, guests mingled through the Hall’s many rooms, and the party atmosphere carried well into the night.
We couldn’t believe you managed to get the lift in the first dance!!! – Annabel & Phil
